What Is Squared Text?

Squared text uses characters from the Enclosed Alphanumeric SupplementUnicode block (U+1F130–U+1F169). Each uppercase letter is enclosed inside a square shape, creating a distinctive badge-like visual style. Because they're standard Unicode characters, they can be copied and pasted into any text field.

You may recognize negative squared letters from television — content ratings like 🅰, 🅱, and 🅿 use these exact Unicode characters.

Limitations of Squared Text

  • Uppercase only — Unicode does not include squared lowercase letters. All input is automatically converted to uppercase.
  • Letters only— numbers, punctuation, and special characters don't have squared equivalents and pass through unchanged.
  • Best for short text — squared text is most visually effective for single words, abbreviations, or short phrases.
  • Newer Unicode block — squared characters are from the Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement (added in Unicode 6.0), so very old devices may not support them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is squared text?
Squared text consists of Unicode characters where each letter is enclosed inside a square shape. There are two variants: squared (🄰🄱🄲 — outlined squares) and negative squared (🅰🅱🅲 — filled squares with white letters). Both come from the Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement Unicode block (U+1F130–U+1F169) and are real characters you can copy and paste.
What is the difference between squared and negative squared text?
Squared text (🄰🄱🄲) shows letters inside outlined square borders — the background is transparent/white. Negative squared text (🅰🅱🅲) shows white letters on filled dark squares — creating a bolder, badge-like appearance. Both only support uppercase A-Z. Negative squared is the same style used for TV ratings like 🅰, 🅱, etc.
Does squared text support lowercase letters?
No. The Unicode standard only defines squared characters for uppercase letters A through Z. There are no squared lowercase letters in Unicode. When you type lowercase text, our generator converts it to the uppercase squared equivalent. Numbers and special characters pass through unchanged.
Can I use squared text on Instagram?
Yes! Squared text works in Instagram bios, captions, and comments on most modern devices. Negative squared letters (🅰🅱🅲) tend to render more consistently than outlined squared letters (🄰🄱🄲) on Instagram because they're more widely supported in emoji fonts. Always test on your device first.
Why does squared text only show uppercase?
The Unicode Consortium — the organization that defines Unicode characters — only included squared versions for uppercase A-Z in the Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement block. This is because squared characters were originally designed for labeling and annotation purposes (like TV content ratings), not as a full text replacement system.
Does squared text work on Discord and WhatsApp?
Discord renders both squared (🄰) and negative squared (🅰) characters well, making it a great platform for squared text. WhatsApp also supports these characters on iOS and Android, though rendering may vary slightly between devices. The negative squared style generally has more consistent support across messaging platforms.
How is squared text different from circled text?
Both use the same concept — enclosing letters in a shape — but the shape differs. Circled text (ⓐⓑⓒ) uses circles and covers lowercase a-z. Squared text (🄰🄱🄲 / 🅰🅱🅲) uses squares and covers uppercase A-Z only. They come from different Unicode blocks: Enclosed Alphanumerics for circles and Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement for squares.
