What Is Circled Text?

Circled text uses characters from the Enclosed Alphanumerics block (U+2460โ€“U+24FF) in the Unicode standard. Each letter or number is enclosed inside a circle, creating a distinctive visual style. These are real characters โ€” not images or CSS effects โ€” so they can be copied and pasted anywhere.

Unicode also includes a supplementary block called Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement (U+1F150โ€“U+1F169) which adds negative circled (filled) letters for uppercase A-Z.

White Circled vs Black Circled

โ“โ“‘โ“’โ““โ“”

White Circled

  • Lowercase a-z
  • Numbers โ‘  through โ‘ณ and โ“ช
  • Outlined circles, transparent fill
  • Widest platform compatibility
  • Block: Enclosed Alphanumerics

๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…’๐Ÿ…“๐Ÿ…”

Black / Negative Circled

  • Uppercase A-Z
  • Numbers โถ through โฟ
  • Filled circles, white letters
  • Bolder, more eye-catching
  • Block: Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement

Circled Numbers in Unicode

Unicode provides circled numbers for common numbering needs:

โ“ช โ‘  โ‘ก โ‘ข โ‘ฃ โ‘ค โ‘ฅ โ‘ฆ โ‘ง โ‘จ โ‘ฉ โ‘ช โ‘ซ โ‘ฌ โ‘ญ โ‘ฎ โ‘ฏ โ‘ฐ โ‘ฑ โ‘ฒ โ‘ณ

White circled numbers 0โ€“20 (U+24EA, U+2460โ€“U+2473)

โถ โท โธ โน โบ โป โผ โฝ โพ โฟ

Negative circled numbers 1โ€“10 (U+2776โ€“U+277F)

These are widely used in annotations, documentation, and ordered lists where you want a cleaner look than standard numbered bullets.

Circled vs Bubble vs Enclosed Text

These terms are often used interchangeably:

  • Circled text โ€” the Unicode-standard term for letters/numbers enclosed in circles.
  • Bubble text โ€” the casual/popular name for the same characters (because they look like bubbles).
  • Enclosed Alphanumerics โ€” the official Unicode block name for the character range containing these symbols.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is circled text?
Circled text consists of Unicode characters where each letter or number is enclosed inside a circle. These come from the Enclosed Alphanumerics block (U+2460โ€“U+24FF) and the Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement block (U+1F150โ€“U+1F169) in the Unicode standard. Examples: โ“โ“‘โ“’ (white circled) and ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…’ (negative circled / black circled).
What is the difference between white circled and black circled text?
White circled text (โ“โ“‘โ“’) shows letters inside an outlined circle with a white/transparent background. Black circled or 'negative circled' text (๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…’) shows white letters on a filled dark circle. White circled covers lowercase a-z and digits 1-20. Negative circled covers uppercase A-Z and is from the newer Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement block.
Does Unicode include circled numbers?
Yes! Unicode includes circled numbers from โ‘  (U+2460) through โ‘ณ (U+2473) for digits 1 through 20. There's also โ“ช (U+24EA) for circled zero. Negative circled digits โถ through โฟ (U+2776โ€“U+277F) cover 1 through 10 with filled dark circles. These are great for numbered lists and annotations.
Can I use circled text on social media?
Yes! Circled text works on Instagram (bios, captions, comments), Discord (usernames, messages, server names), TikTok (bios), WhatsApp (status, messages), Twitter/X, and Facebook. White circled letters have the widest compatibility. Negative circled letters work on most modern devices but may show as boxes on very old ones.
Why do some circled characters show as empty boxes?
Empty boxes (โ–ก or โ–ฏ) appear when your device doesn't have the font to render that Unicode character. This most commonly happens with negative circled letters (๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…‘๐Ÿ…’) on older operating systems. White circled letters (โ“โ“‘โ“’) have broader support. Updating your device's OS usually fixes this issue.
What is the difference between circled text and bubble text?
They're the same thing! 'Bubble text' is the casual name people use because the circled letters look like bubbles. 'Circled text' and 'Enclosed Alphanumerics' are the official Unicode terms. Our Bubble Text Generator and Circled Text Generator both use the same underlying Unicode characters.
Are circled text characters searchable?
Generally, no. Search engines and text search tools treat Unicode circled characters differently from regular letters. The letter โ“ is a distinct character from 'a' โ€” so text written in circled Unicode won't appear in normal text searches. Use circled text for visual decoration, not for content you need to be searchable or indexed.
