What Is Glitch Text?

Glitch text — also known as Zalgo text, corrupted text, or cursed text — is a form of text decoration created by stacking Unicode combining diacritical marks on each character. The result is text that appears to be visually broken, corrupted, or “glitching,” with marks extending far above and below the normal text boundaries.

Unlike images or custom web fonts, glitch text is composed of real Unicode characters that can be copied, pasted, and displayed in any text field on any modern device. It's widely used for horror aesthetics, cyberpunk styling, gaming usernames, social media bios, and creative expression across platforms like Discord, Instagram, TikTok, and Roblox.

Glitch Text vs. Zalgo Text

“Glitch text” and “Zalgo text” refer to the exact same technique. The term “Zalgo” originates from a creepypasta internet meme — an entity said to corrupt everything it touches. The dripping, corrupted text style became associated with Zalgo and the name stuck. “Glitch text” is the broader, more modern term that encompasses the full range of corrupted text aesthetics, from subtle digital noise to extreme horror-style corruption.

Our generator supports both ends of this spectrum with 39 presets across 6 categories. Subtle presets like “Minimal” and “Vaporwave” add gentle, stylish distortion. Heavy presets like “Horror” and “Extreme Glitch” produce the full Zalgo effect. Our new “Directional” category lets you isolate glitch marks to specific zones — “Above Only” for ghost towers, “Below Only” for dripping horror, or fade effects that transition from clean to corrupted. You can also layer a Unicode font style (Bold, Fraktur, Script, and more) before applying glitch marks for dramatically unique layered effects.

How Unicode Combining Characters Work

Unicode assigns each text character a unique code point. Most characters are “spacing” — they occupy horizontal space. But a special class called combining characters(officially “combining diacritical marks”) have no width of their own. Instead, they attach to the preceding base character and render relative to its position.

For example, the letter “a” (U+0061) followed by Combining Acute Accent (U+0301) produces “á”. This is how accented characters work in many languages. The glitch effect exploits this by stacking many combining marks on a single base character — 5, 10, or even 20+ marks per letter. Since each mark tries to render above, through, or below the character, the visual result overflows the normal text bounds, creating the signature corrupted appearance.

Understanding the Three Zones

Combining characters render in three visual zones relative to the base character. Our generator lets you toggle each zone independently for full creative control.

  • Above (Class 230) — Accent marks, dots, rings, tildes, and arrows that render above the baseline. These create the “towering” effect. Approximately 44 combining characters in our pool, drawn from U+0300–U+0315 and surrounding ranges.
  • Middle / Overlay (Class 1) — Strikethrough, slash, and tilde overlays that render directly through the character. These create the “corrupted” or “hacked” look. 5 combining characters: tilde overlay, short stroke, long stroke, short solidus, long solidus.
  • Below (Class 220) — Subscript dots, hooks, lines, rings, and cedillas that extend below the baseline. These create the “dripping” effect. Approximately 49 combining characters drawn from U+0316–U+0333 and surrounding ranges.

Try toggling zones individually, or use our dedicated “Directional” preset category which includes “Above Only” for ethereal floating text, “Below Only” for horror-poster dripping text, “Middle Only” for corrupted terminal output, and “Left Fade” / “Right Fade” for progressive directional corruption. Combined with our font combo feature, you can create Fraktur text that drips downward or Bold Script that floats upward — thousands of unique combinations.

Platform Compatibility Guide

Glitch text works on all modern platforms that support Unicode, but rendering varies by intensity level and platform-specific text handling:

  • Discord — Best rendering of all platforms. All intensity levels work in usernames, server names, bios, and messages. The most popular destination for glitch text.
  • Instagram — Bios and captions support light-to-medium glitch (intensity 1–5). Very heavy Zalgo may be stripped during editing. Test on mobile before saving.
  • TikTok & YouTube — Profile bios and descriptions handle moderate glitch well. Video titles with heavy glitch may hurt discoverability via search.
  • Gaming (Roblox, Steam, PUBG) — Display names support Unicode glitch. Lighter intensities have wider compatibility. Some games strip combining marks entirely, so always test in-game.
  • X (Twitter), Reddit, WhatsApp — Messages and posts render glitch text well. Twitter combining characters count toward the 280-character limit. Reddit supports glitch in comments but not usernames.

Accessibility and Safe Usage

Glitch text poses accessibility challenges. Screen readers may attempt to read each combining mark individually, producing garbled audio output like “a combining grave accent combining tilde combining ring above...” instead of simply “a.” For accessible web content, CSS-based glitch effects (using clip-path and RGB color shifting) are preferable because they keep the underlying text readable for assistive technology.

  • 1.Use light intensity for functional text — If your glitch text needs to convey information (like a username or event title), keep intensity at 1–3 so the text remains readable.
  • 2.Reserve heavy glitch for decorative use — Extreme Zalgo is best for artistic expression, thumbnails, and visual impact where readability is secondary.
  • 3.Be considerate in shared spaces — Heavy glitch text in group chats or forum posts can be disruptive. Many Discord communities have rules limiting Zalgo usage.
  • 4.Check the readability meter — Our generator includes a real-time readability score (0–100) to help you balance visual impact with legibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is glitch text?+

Glitch text (also called Zalgo text, corrupted text, or cursed text) is text that appears visually distorted by stacking Unicode combining diacritical marks above, through, and below each character. The result looks like the text is glitching, dripping, or corrupted. It is pure Unicode — not an image or custom font — so it can be copied and pasted into any text field on any platform.

What is the difference between glitch text and Zalgo text?+

They refer to the same technique. 'Zalgo text' is named after a creepypasta internet meme character. 'Glitch text' is the broader aesthetic term. Both work by appending multiple Unicode combining characters to each base letter. Our generator uses both terms interchangeably because they produce identical output — stacked combining marks creating a corrupted visual effect.

How does glitch text work technically?+

Unicode includes 'combining characters' (U+0300 to U+036F and extended blocks) that don't occupy their own space. Instead, they attach to the preceding base character. Normally, one or two combining marks form an accent (like é or ñ). When you stack 5, 10, or 20+ marks on a single character, they overflow the normal text bounds, creating the signature glitch effect. Our generator categorizes marks into three zones — above, middle (overlay), and below — and lets you control how many marks from each zone are applied.

Can I use glitch text on Instagram?+

Yes, but with moderation. Instagram supports glitch text in bios, captions, and comments. Light to medium intensity (1-5 on our slider) works reliably. Very heavy glitch (intensity 7+) may be silently stripped from bios by Instagram's text sanitization. We recommend using our 'Instagram Safe' preset for the best results. Always preview your bio on mobile before committing.

Does glitch text work on Discord?+

Discord has the best glitch text rendering of all major platforms. All intensity levels (1-10) display correctly in usernames, server names, bios, and messages. Discord is the most popular platform for glitch text, especially in horror, gaming, and aesthetic communities. Note that some Discord servers use moderation bots that may flag or remove heavily glitched text.

Why doesn't my glitch text display correctly?+

Several factors can affect rendering: (1) Very old devices or browsers may not support the full Unicode combining marks range. (2) Some platforms strip or limit combining characters to prevent layout disruption. (3) Different fonts render stacked marks differently — system fonts generally handle them best. (4) Extremely high intensity may be clipped by platform-specific UI containers. Try reducing the intensity or using our 'Platform Safe' presets for maximum compatibility.

Is glitch text safe to use?+

Glitch text is completely safe — it uses standard Unicode characters that are part of every modern operating system. It cannot contain malware or harm your device. However, extremely heavy glitch text can cause minor rendering lag in some apps due to the volume of combining marks. For this reason, be considerate when using very heavy glitch text in shared spaces like group chats or forum posts.

Can I remove glitch text / undo the effect?+

Yes! Our Deglitch Tool (available below the main generator) strips all combining marks from any glitched text, recovering the clean original. Just paste the glitched text and get the clean version instantly. This works on any Zalgo or corrupted text, even from other generators.

Does glitch text work on iPhone and Android?+

Yes. Both iOS (10+) and Android (8+) fully support Unicode combining characters. The glitch effect displays correctly in most apps including Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, and Discord. Very extreme intensity may render slightly differently between iOS and Android due to different font rendering engines, but the effect works on both platforms.

What are the three zones (above, middle, below)?+

Unicode combining characters render in three visual positions relative to the base character. 'Above' marks appear on top (accents, dots, tildes — mostly U+0300 to U+0315). 'Middle' marks overlay the character itself (strikethrough, slash — U+0334 to U+0338). 'Below' marks extend downward (subscript dots, hooks, lines — U+0316 to U+0333). Our generator lets you toggle each zone independently to create different visual effects — 'above only' creates floating text, 'below only' creates dripping text, and 'middle only' creates corrupted strikethrough text.

What is a deterministic seed?+

When enabled, the deterministic seed option makes the glitch output reproducible. Normally, combining marks are chosen randomly, so regenerating the same text produces a slightly different result each time. With a seed number, the randomness becomes predictable — the same text + style + seed always produces identical output. This is useful for branding, consistent usernames, or sharing exact glitch configurations with others.

What are pattern algorithms?+

Pattern algorithms control how glitch intensity is distributed across characters. 'Uniform' applies the same intensity to every character (classic Zalgo). 'Progressive' builds from clean to corrupted left-to-right. 'Wave' creates a sinusoidal intensity variation. 'Pulse' alternates between clean and corrupted characters. 'Random' gives each character independently random intensity. Patterns create visually distinct effects beyond simple uniform corruption.

Can I use glitch text for gaming usernames?+

Yes, glitch text is popular for gaming usernames on Roblox, Steam, Discord, and mobile games. However, each platform has character limits and Unicode support varies. Our 'Gaming Safe' preset is optimized for maximum compatibility across gaming platforms. Light glitch (intensity 1-3) works on almost all games. Always test your username in-game before committing, as some games strip or reject Unicode characters entirely.

Can I combine Unicode fonts with glitch effects?+

Yes! Our Font + Glitch combo feature lets you apply Unicode font styles — Bold Serif, Script, Fraktur, Double-Struck, Monospace, and more — before adding glitch combining marks. The result is layered text like bold-glitched or fraktur-glitched text that looks dramatically different from regular glitch. Select a base font from the dropdown in the controls panel, then choose any glitch preset and intensity. This creates unique layered effects perfect for Discord usernames, Instagram bios, and gaming tags.

What are pattern algorithms like Heartbeat and Staircase?+

Pattern algorithms control how glitch intensity varies across your text. Beyond the original five patterns, we added three new algorithms: 'Heartbeat' creates a spike-rest-spike rhythm like a heart monitor — every 4th character gets full intensity while others stay clean. 'Staircase' builds in four stepped levels across the text, creating a structured escalation. 'Fade In-Out' peaks in the middle of your text and tapers to clean at both edges, creating a focal-point effect. Combined with our 39 presets and font combos, these 8 total patterns enable thousands of unique glitch text variations.
